 ABOUT THIS POST

Did'ja ever...?

Did you ever meet a person for the first time and, based on demeanor, language, and character, imagine their past to be as quiet or reserved as they appeared and then learn they had a much more interesting past than you ever imagined? If not, you’re missing a lot.  That waiter, cashier, or person sitting next to you at a bar or restaurant might have a past steeped in rich experiences, good and bad, that contribute to who they are. Don’t mistake their life for being irrelevant to yours – they might have served in the military, law enforcement, or volunteered in a nursing home where your grandparents were cared for.

Most people on the planet are familiar with big names in music, show business, or politics. From a passing familiarity with names or faces of well-known people to frenzied fans who know the smallest details about a personality’s life, celebrities of all stripes often hijack our time and energy, leaving little of either to recognize and appreciate other lesser-known people in our everyday lives. That’s where this blog comes in.

Modern life has adopted a celebrity-driven façade. In studies of social psychology, I have thought of those people about whom we never hear – the quiet ones who wrote a novel, who gave up six-figure incomes to serve another cause besides their own, served their country in the military, or gave up a lucrative future to care for children – their own or others.

The personal sagas the vast majority of people on the planet, keep life going. Protecting their countries or communities, raising and educating children, selflessly contributing to society’s well-being through volunteerism, most of us live life in hushed tones. Meanwhile, a few people, with or without authentic talent, insist on announcing to the world how great they are, how talented they are, and how we would miss them if they were gone. Granted, the truly talented ones deserve accolades from their fans; however, many achieve celebrity status through hype and marketing only.

The intent of this blog is to reveal the personal sagas of those who have lived life differently than we might imagine but who have led lives of high interest and intense experiences.
